About Mon Repos

Mon Repos is globally renowned for its role in marine turtle conservation. It supports the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the Australian mainland, with around 350 turtles laying here each year.

Every night during laying season (October to December), marine turtles return to the same beach from which they once hatched to lay their eggs. Despite travelling the globe, they use the earth’s magnetic force to find their way home to our beach.  

Then, during hatching season (January to April), hundreds of adorable baby turtles emerge from the sand to make the perilous journey down the beach and out to sea. To watch their tiny fins propel them seaward by moonlight is to witness the start of nature’s most incredible journey.

Turtle Sands

The endangered loggerhead

While flatback and green turtles nest here, the endangered loggerhead turtle makes up 95% of nesting numbers. Successful breeding at Mon Repos Beach is considered essential for the survival of this species. When you join a November to March, you’ll see conservation in action. Rangers and researchers will be working on the beach to study these prehistoric creatures, which date back further than the dinosaurs.

Join a turtle tour

Here at Turtle Sands, our contemporary accommodation is just metres from where turtles nest and hatch. Join Queensland Parks and Wildlife Rangers on a guided Turtle Encounter Tour from November to March to witness these magnificent creatures nest and hatch.
